QUESTIONS

Team play

  • It depends. Most weekend games are either hosted on South Mercer or within an hour away.

Tournaments are typically 3+ hours driving. Here are some tournaments our competitive programs have attended:

    • Centralia, WA

    • Ellensberg, WA

    • Wenatchee, WA

    • Seattle, WA

    • Bend, OR

    • Arizona

  • Tournaments are typically 2-3 days of play. Each team is guaranteed a certain number of games (usually 2-3), and the rest are based on qualifying.

Schedules for tournaments are typically released between Tuesday to Thursday before the tournament.

  • In developmental and younger teams, players are encouraged to play different positions.

As players progress into older teams, particularly on Maroon, they will develop more specialties.

Little League + Select

  • Little League is part of the national little league association, available for anyone to play.

Select is a try-out only league.

They have different age requirements, and different rules of play.

  • Yes! Little League is an incredible organization with resources our community benefits from. The Mercer Island Little League program needs the participation of Select players to meet enrollment minimums.

Side note, the kids love having both… and we value community. We want all of our kids to play baseball together.

Most other community-based Select programs have a similar policy.

  • We work hard on scheduling so that Little League and Select do not conflict. Little League should take priority over Select.

  • Little League and Select Coaches work off of a master pitching live document.

Both coaches input the pitch count to the document the day of their games so everyone has visibility and can manage to guidelines.

  • Little League includes:

    • 1.5 hour practice

    • 1.5 hr batting cage time

    • 1-2 games per week

Little League takes place on Mon-Thu, and Sat.

Note, your Little League team may not take all of these days!

    Select includes:

    • Fri practice

    • One additional game or practice day on Sundays

    • In addition, we will have 3-4 weekends for travel tournaments, which run Sat and Sun.

Try-Outs

  • We have players try-out each year because we are committed to giving them the best experience and most development possible.

Each year, we may have a change in enrollment, or in player capability, that would require the program to revisit the composition of each team.

It’s our goal to keep all players in the MISB club, and keep them playing baseball for as long as they are committed, through our Select and Development teams.

  • Select baseball try outs evaluate basic skills. Players will be rated on base running speed, batting, infield, outfield, pitching and catching (if applicable).

The evaluators will be a mix of independent evaluators and named managers to a specific team to avoid bias yet allow for managers to have a voice in the talent on their team.

Parents will be able to request feedback on their child’s placement.

  • We are focused on developing kids for future play. We know that development is not linear, that players can evolve and change even through the season.

With this in mind, we try to offer every player committed to MISB an opportunity to continue with the program and develop.

Our focus is leveling players appropriately between competitive and development-focused teams.

If we do not have enough players at a white or silver team level, then MISB may try to recruit players from the community to fill a team, or, if possible, move players from other teams that are age-eligible to fill out this team.

When it is not possible to form another development team, then MISB may connect the players that didn’t make the team in a group, and work with community partners on an MI-focused development program that these players can participate in to continue to develop their skills and stay with the MISB program.

  • Players should wear comfortable clothes, including baseball hats, pants and cleats. They cannot wear team uniforms or team jerseys for try outs. They may wear baseball pants of their choice.

They should bring a baseball bat, mitt, helmet, and a water bottle with them.

  • It is a closed try-out.

Although it is held in a public location, we ask that parents and spectators do not watch the try-outs.

  • The try-out costs $25 per registrant. There are more program fees for the team, see program overview page.

  • See information here, on our Programs> What to expect from the season page
